Location

Sawara City is situated in the northeastern part of Chiba Prefecture, bordering on Ibaraki Prefecture across the Tone River. The city is within a range of 70km from Tokyo, 50km from Chiba City and 15km from Narita City which has the Narita International Airport, a hub airport, connecting to all parts of the world.

The Geographical Features

The Tone River flows from east to west through the city, dividing it into two (the northern and southern parts).

The northern part is a stretch of low, wet land piled up by the alluvial soil, whose fantastic scenery has attracted a lot of artists. The southern part, overlooking a flat area of the city's administrative and business center along the Tone River, rises to diluvial hills in gentle undulations toward the North Chiba tableland.

Weather

It is mild all through the year, and the average temperature during the years 1985-1987 was 14.1 degrees Celsius and the average yearly rainfall during the same period was 1,300mm. The wind often blows from the south in summer, and from the north in winter. A snowfall is rare in winter.

Population and Industry

According to the national census in 2000, the population of the Sawara City is 48328, and the number of the households is 14765. In the last 10 years, the increase of the people and households seems to stop.

The rate of the industrial structure was, the national census in 1985 shows, 57% of the tertiary industries (at highest), 23.1% of the secondary industries, and 19.8% of the primary industries.
